Man unterscheidet im Wesentlichen zwei Bauarten von Druckgießmaschinen, nämlich solche mit kalter und warmer Befüllungskammer. Hydraulikzylinder kommen sowohl beim Warmkammer-Verfahren als auch beim Kaltkammer-Verfahren zum Einsatz.
